Fluffy Towels & Soft Sheets

Earlier today I got into a discussion about restoring softness to fabrics, did you know that your sweat, body products, washing powders and especially fabric softner all stick to the fibres of you clothes making them stiff? Ever pulled out a towel from the cupboard only for it to be scratchy and hard? That is why!
It is tempting to just go out and buy fresh linen for the light fluffy feel but it is much cheaper to do it yourself. To maintain fluffiness stop using fabric softener, it is horrible stuff that sticks to your fabrics making them less absorbent and less fluffy! Yes, yes I know there are massive brands designed to make you think it is making things "fluffy" but in fact it is just creating a chemical build up that slowly turns your towels into useless scratchy cloths.
Make sure you are using the correct amount of washing powder for the size of your load, have a look at the box, I bet on the back there are instructions that you have happily ignored for years!
Now, back to the scratchy towels, how to fix them you ask?! With plain old, cheap as chips white vinegar. If your towels are only a little scratchy just add a good dash of vinegar into a cold wash and then hang your towels & sheets to dry in the sun on the line.
If you need to soften something that you think is a bit past it, maybe you could run a crease down the front of your pants without an iron? Then you need to soak first.
Fill a bucket or the laundry tub with warm water then add a cup of white vinegar, swish your clothes or towels around and give them a good massage, work the water into those fibres! Then once everything in the tub is nice and relaxed turn the light off and let them have a nice soak overnight. The next day pop them in a cold wash with no chemicals. Hang in the sun to dry - fresh fluffy towels for days!!! The sun will also give your sheets a lovely crisp clean feel and if you peg them out correctly you won't even have to iron them!
