I now spend in excess of two hours in traffic every single work day, it used to be quite a breeze, 45 minutes either way, maybe 55 minutes if there was an accident. However this was prior to the Legacy Way tunnel opening.
The tunnel has made a vast improvement to my morning commute, pretty much guaranteed to be at work in 45 minutes. The drive home is the painful bit, where the tunnel ends everyone is funneled out on the right hand side whilst the left hand lanes end. Infuriating, and slow. Queenslanders do not follow the zipper rule so it is a mess of hard breaking, pushing and late bids for the all important exit on the left hand side; three lanes over for anyone coming out of the tunnel.
This time in the traffic has one big positive time to think. I do not use this time productivly. I am not thinking about World Peace or even what I should cook for dinner. No, I am thinking about how much everyone else sucks.
I have made a list, because lists are soothing.
People I hate when I'm stuck in traffic
Drivers who text - are you freaking serious?
Actually all drivers using their phones not on hands free, and if you hold your phone horizontal in front of your face I dislike you the most.
Drivers who do not indicate and then act all miffed when you beep them for nearly running into you.
Drivers who cruise up the left lane that "must exit" only to try to push back into the right lane at the last second. Because I am normally pretty angry by this stage I will block for a minute so you so you panic a bit and hopefully think twice tomorrow. If you are on your phone or not indicating you will find yourself turning left.
Drivers who panic because the lane next to them seems faster so they irratically pull in and out of various lanes.
There are lots more reasons why other drivers frustrate me but instead of giving them the old fashioned forks I now have my little mantra "I am not an angry person". I will take a deep breath, repeat it a few times, turn up Hughsy & Kate on 97.3fm (they are hilarious) and force a smile as I wave the panicking Learner in.
After all I am blessed to be heading home to my loving Husband in my very nice, safe, comfy car - complete with air con. Even if it does take me well over an hour most days.
