Yesterday was Shovey's second adoptaversary, I am terrible at remembering pet birthdays, adoption dates etc. The only reason I remembered this one was because of Facebooks memories app, thanks Facebook!
Shovey did not care nor did he realise the significance of this day, he got up early made sure we went on a big walk and didn't really care that I gave him lamb for breakfast instead of one of his usual greyhound biscuits. Life is pretty cushy when you're a retired greyhound.
Not many greyhounds make it to retirement, dog racing is a big business, and like most businesses there is a percentage of waste. Unfortunately in this industry it is dogs. They either have a fault from birth, don't chase, can't run fast enough or get injured, then they make their way to the big dog park in the sky. It is really quite horrible but this is not a blog post designed to depress you, no it is a celebration of Shovey! Shovey is one of the lucky ones, he was loved by his trainer and won a few races too. When he was too old to race and the trainer couldn't keep him due to dog number restrictions he was surrendered to GAP QLD, this is the Greyhound Adoption Program, they help greyhounds find new families and adjust to life as a pet. You can find out more here www.gapqld.com.au
You may have heard they need lots of exercise, whilst the certainly enjoy a daily walk they tend to be speedy couch potatoes with bursts of energy but most of the time can be found napping in the sun. A lot of people also believe that greyhounds are inside dogs, this is not always the case. We couldn't have Shovey inside and he copes just fine! He has a big kennel, a second mattress in the sun, a big yard and gets to wander around as he pleases.
If you are looking for a kind, gentle soul to come into your life, warm your heart and a friend for you and your family, consider a greyhound. It was the best decision we ever made.
