Nothing is better than a kids birthday party, the sugar, the anticipation, the treats! When I think back to the best childhood parties they all included a cake lovingly made by Mum, plus all the special food you only had on rare occassions - fairy bread, frankfurts and cordial were a guarantee.
The cakes are still spectacular, I remember pouring over the AWW Birthday cake books months in advance trying to choose which cake I would have that year. We challenged Mum with everything from cricket pitches to castles and even platform shoes complete with jelly bean straps. She made them all, each fantastic and all before Youtube tutorials or even the internet.
Birthday parties have grown over the years and parents seem to be trying to improve the party each year with Pinterest planning for months in advance. I of course have all this to look forward to. I love making cakes and treats for friends kids and these racing cars are very popular!
Ingredients
Bag of Smarties
Box of Tiny Teddies
Packet of 24 lamingtons
Jar of nutella*
Method
Open up your Smarties and sort into colour if like me you want all your wheels to match. Find a nice big tray, I use the rectanlge Tupperware sweet keeper. Once you put together your cars you won't want to move them around too much.
Take a lamington and using a butter knife poke the lamington twice in one half of the lamington about 1cm apart. Poke a tiny teddy into the the middle hole, then poke a smartie in front of your teddy, this is the steering wheel.
Take four smarties and place a dob of nutella on one side, press against the sides of your lamington to make your wheels. Keep going until you have 24 awesome teddy race cars!
That's it, they really are that easy and you didn't even have to turn on the oven! With so little effort you won't even be disappointed when the kids just pick off the lollies and leave the rest.
*If you have nut allergies or there is a nut ban at school you can mix up a basic icing to stick the wheels on however the colour may bleed slightly.
