Thirty-One feels like kind of a big deal, your twenties are long gone and you are well and truly a proper grown-up. Husband doesn't really like a big fuss, he isn't into surprises or trinkets, but he does love Dr Pepper and he does love cake.
A quick Google and I found this recipe, it seemed pretty popular as it was on lots of sites. Quick and easy too!

Ingredients
250gm softened butter 250ml Dr. Pepper 4 tbsp. cocoa 2 room temperature eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups caster sugar 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 tsp. baking soda 2 cups self raising flour 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Method
Grease and line a large baking tray, I used a big brownie tray but a roasting tray would also work. Turn your oven to 160c Fan Forced.
In a small saucepan heat your butter, cocoa and Dr. Pepper over a medium heat until combined. Set aside.
Cream your eggs, sugar, milk and baking soda in a stand mixture at low-med speed until the sugar has started to dissolve.
Sift your flour and cinnamon together. Add flour mixture alternately with Dr. Pepper mixture to the stand mixer. Finally add your vanilla.
Pour into your lined pan and bake in the centre of the oven for approximately 35 minutes or until you can lightly touch the centre and it bounces back.
I used a buttercream frosting for this cake which was simply 250gm softened butter with 750gm icing sugar. Combined at high speed in my stand mixer. I also went a bit crazy with the fondant decorations because Birthday Cake!
Notes
The first recipe I found called for a can of Dr. Pepper, I assumed this was a standard 375ml can however it was too liquid and I had to balance the recipe out. 250ml is much safer and you could just put the leftover Dr. Pepper into the icing!
When working with fondant knead it onto a surface sprinkled with icing sugar, this will make it less sticky and will hold its shape better.
Finally since when are those silver balls soft?! The best part was sucking on them so you didn't chip your teeth!
Forcing your Husband to pose with his cake is mandatory, as is blowing out candles.
