Cold Calling

Did you cringe? Did you just think of all the times you have told a cold caller to fuck off? I understand, I really do, you just sat down, it’s dinner time, you had to stop that doing that really important thing to answer the call…but did you ever stop to think that the person on the other end of the phone is just doing their job?
The person working in a call centre is someone’s son or daughter, parent, friend or neighbour. Would you tell the Traffic Controller to fuck off because he stopped you from going where you wanted to go? Probably not, after all he is just doing his job…
A big part of my job is cold calling, most people don’t use their home phones these days so it is a lot of calling and hanging up. I have heard some fantastic voicemail messages, people can be funny! Occasionally I get to talk to someone, sometimes they’re lovely and don’t mind a quick chat or a “No thank you”. Mostly I get told to fuck off. I’m not going to lie, it can be pretty draining, I drink too much coffee and my sugar cravings are high after a few hours. On the drive home I’m usually thinking about wine and what to have for dinner because wine isn’t really dinner.
So please, next time you get a cold call don’t just give the caller a mouthful, if you don’t like the reason for the call say “No thank you” and if you really want ask to be removed from the call list, it’s their job to keep trying to convince you it’s a good deal!
