Cheeky Checkers

My now you would know I have a few pets, all from various rescue associations and all loved greatly. We adopted Checkers from the RSPCA in 2009. We had taken our other cats there to be microchipped and there she was, 6 months old and super playful.

I was playing with her through the cage wire when an RSPCA staff member got really excited, "You like Checkers?! That is great! She is nearly SIX months old and the last kitten, she has been here soooo long and only really has two weeks left before we move her on..."

Move her on. What did that even mean!? This sweet kitten might get to go to the big kitty palace in the sky?! They were only asking $60, since she had been there so long. I am a complete soft touch and kept telling my Husband that if it didn't work out we could always find her a new home. We had a kitty meeting with our other cats, Cookie gave her a lick and Checkers put herself in Minnies cat carrier. She was coming home.

Checkers is a wonderful cat, so playful, energetic and loves to play fetch with bottle lids. She steals anything that looks like a lid and hides them, mostly under the fridge. She is super nosey and will sit for hours watching the neighbours through the fence. Laundry day is her favourite day and she will attack the sheets as you make the bed every morning.

She is super cheeky and loves to be in the highest part of the room! Shower screens included. She thinks fish are food, not friends and won't ever be convinced otherwise.

Late last year she became quite unwell, she was diagnosed with a food intollerance and has been on a special diet since. In the last two weeks she has lost over 1kg, a lot when you only weigh 4kg. A trip to the vets lead to a day of tests. Last night she was diagnosed with Terminal Stomach Cancer. Naturally we are heartbroken.

Nothing can be done really, we have some special food for her and tablets. We intend to spoil her whilst we still can, of course if she starts to suffer we will have to be there with pats and kisses and take her to the vet one very last time.

Love your pets dearly, give them an extra pat today, walk your dogs a little further, brush your cats a little longer. You just never know how long you will have them for.

Mrs Roberts.
